Independence

     If you can remember, Philippines has been colonized by the Spaniards for over 300 years. Philippines is named after King Philip II of Spain. According to articles, Ferdinand Magellan landed in Philippines in 1521 and claimed that the islands are for Spain. Lapu Lapu did not agree to Magellan’s plan, because of that, Magellan wanted to kill Lapu Lapu but he failed and was killed.

    In the year 1892, Jose Rizal founded a movement called “Liga Filipina”. Sadly, Rizal was arrested and exiled to Dapitan on Mindanao. Moreover, Andres Bonifacio formed an organization called “Katipunan”.

     

 A war between Spain and U.S. happened in 1898. Americans defeated the Spaniards on April 30, 1898. Emilio Aguinaldo then declared the Philippines as independent on June 12.

Celebrating Independence day has been a culture for the Filipino People. To remember the sacrifices of the National Heroes and to appreciate the country’s sovereignty.
